RETURN OF THE SLICK 50

Posted March 15, 2017 @ 4:54pm

RETURN OF THE SLICK 50OK, all you cowboys, here’s the lowdown on the Slick 50 get down:Let’s get one thing straight, right out the gate. The Slick 50 is not a race. It’s not an alley cat, a gran fondle, a pub crawl, nor a fucking gravel grinder. (shudder). The Slick 50 is a road ride. But that doesn’t necessarily mean a paved road ride. So come prepared for just about anything, Pavé, mud, dirt, gravel, tarmac. Most people ride drop bars, and you could certainly do the route on 25c’s, but run wutchu brung, Bring a spare tube/tools/pump/food/water, etc.Yes, historically this has been technically a “no-drop” ride, but yes, groups will form. There will be some fast fuckers on the front. If you’re a fast fucker, feel free to go to the front, however, also please realize that it’s wayyyy early in the season. No need to turn yourself inside out to try and stay with the lead...

DIRT ROCK N ROLLER (THE BALLAD OF DAVID PIKE)

Posted January 18, 2017 @ 12:49pm

DIRT ROCK N ROLLER (THE BALLAD OF DAVID PIKE)This is a story of remembering, reminiscing, rejoicing, and dirt rock and roll. TURN THE STEREO UP!D Pike on the Maah Daah Hey TrailRolled out to Boulder, CO this past weekend with H-wood, K-wood, and Crossmax for our pal David Pike’s memorial, a celebration, a reminder, a rejoinder, an affirmation of life and love for our fallen friend. The temperature is well below 0° for our 9pm departure. Hollywood is driving all night long, Minneapolis to Boulder, in our rental mini van, four people, four bikes in a straight rock and roll onslaught, serenaded by satellite radio stations Ozzy’s Boneyard and Hairball Nation. Driving at night makes the miles seemingly roll faster, a nocturnal illusion punctuated with stops at Kum & Go, and Dunkin’ Donuts. By sunrise, we’re ensconced at Grannie’s Diner in Ft. Lupton, CO for early morning juevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, and biscuits & gravy....

FAT BIKE CONFESSIONAL

Posted January 10, 2017 @ 5:14pm

FAT BIKE CONFESSIONALWinter cycling has been going on forever. And it certainly doesn’t require any special equipment to do it. But whenever it’s mentioned that you cycle in the winter, out trots the inevitable question: “do you have one of those fat bikes?” “No,” is my response. And, I must admit, I often feel inclined to add, “nor, am I into to cross-fit. Or vegan.” See, that’s what generally gores my ox about fat biking. People won’t shut up about it. On and on about tire size and rim width, studded tires? Tubeless? Carbon? All this usually just for a jaunt across town, whether riding to work, the grocery store, coffee shop, or even the bar. But I get it, man, I really do. Fatties are fun. When conditions warrant, and especially with good snow, you truly can ride them almost anywhere. So when Surly Bikes brand manager Paul Zeigle asked me, “do you want to bike pack Duluth Traverse on New Year’s...

Small Batch Embro + Rock And Roll

Posted November 22, 2016 @ 12:45pm

Small Batch Embro + Rock And Roll Anyone who knows me knows my love of rock and roll, and no band epitomizes that more than Seattle's ZEKE. When I stumbled upon their Flat Tracker release at Minneapolis' RoadRunner Records back in 1998 I was all in, both for the snarling, speedy riffs of Blind Marky Felchtone & Co, but also for the vintage b&w cover shot of Mert Lawill. Released on Scooch Pooch Records, Flat Tracker was (and still is!) some good shit. Intrigued, I sent away for their mail order catalog. Fast-forward to last year and I stumbled upon a little company called Small Batch Embrocation, based in Los Angeles, California offering embrocation and muscle rubs for cycling. Always a fan of small, d.i.y. business, it was with no small bit of wonderment that I learned that Small Batch proprietor Jim Ransweiler was also part of Scooch Pooch all those years ago. Small Batch offers six embros of varying heat, along with chamois creme and a muscle rub. I've been using the...
