Update on Loren Morlock-Tuesday, April 25

Posted April 25, 2006 @ 6:06am | by Hurl

Dear Family and Friends of Loren, Jenn, Nancy, Tom, and James: I don't have much new to report on Loren's condition, but what I do have is mostly good. I dropped by to see him early this morning and when I walked into his room he was lying in bed with his eyes open staring straight forward. I passed the foot of his bed into his line of sight and he continued to track me until I was by his side. He looked directly into my eyes and began to move his arms and legs as if to say "Get me outta here!". As too much mental stimuli or agitation can cause an increase in cranial pressure, I asked him to calm down and save his strength. He promptly nodded his head, closed his eyes, and relaxed his limbs for a moment. He's definitely figuring out that he wants be out of the hospital and what it's going to take to do it. But I shouldn't misguide you in any way; he still has a long journey before him. Loren's doctors have been lowering his sedation level to prepare him for the removal of his ventilator. They want him fairly alert when they take it out to ensure that his body is ready to breathe on its own. His staff did a little trial run of him trying to breathe unassisted and he became a bit panicky, thus they've elected to wait a little longer. They hope that tomorrow will be the day. Loren respirating on his own will mark a significant stride towards recovery; everyone here is cautiously optimistic he'll be breathing freely within the next 24 hours. The next couple of days are going to be taxing on him. Once they are behind him however, his recovery will be less of a day-by-day sort of thing, and more of a forward looking affair. Nancy has a request that she would like to pass on to everyone. She asks that all of you who wish you could share a thought with Loren actually take the time to do so. For those of you inclined to participate, please take a few moments to write down an anectdote or pargraph pertaining to a role Loren has played in your life. They hope that many of you will respond so they can share your words with him when he's feeling better. Please don't be shy. Put a few thoughts together and email it to Nancy or me. Some of you have undoubtedly noticed that you've received this as a forward from Nancy. The list of people wanting to be kept abreast of Loren's progress has grown larger than I can send in a group mailing. Loren has more supporters than I think he's ever imagined. It's funny to contemplate that he thought he might be unpopular because he's a troublemaker. He was wrong! Thanks to everyone who replied to my email with words of support, and please continue to keep Loren, Jenn, and the kids in your thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Steve Porsborg
