Mapei rolls by while loco locals moto 30 metre gyroscopes...

Posted April 20, 2003 @ 6:06am

Greetings Fiends,It's Sunday evening, 20-April (4-20!) and we are backin Saigon after a rather relaxing week. Leaving NhaTrang the other day we saw two Mapei team riders infull kit heading the other direction, and while on anyother ride I might assume it to be Peter Leugers, inthis case it was quite surreal, and we can only assumethey are in the area for the Trans-VietNam road racewhich started yesterday in Hanoi and finishes 30-Aprilin Saigon. Later on we also passed a carnival-likestand on the side of the road, painted signs depictingEvel Kneivel type riders touting "Moto Bay." Soundsgood; let's check it out...it's a 30 meter tallcylinder with stairs leading up the outside to aviewing platform. Inside, fully enclosed, 4 people arestandind at the bottom of the cylinder, while a womanis riding a motorcycle in gyroscope fashion, climbinghigher and higher up the walls, like some Billy Jackcum-Mert Lawill tripped out balancing act. Bizarre istoo...

No Coasting on the Viet Nam Coast...

Xin Chao,Since I can only update once a week or so, I apologize for the truancy. Here's a brief recount of where we've been, what we've been up to:From Saigon we took a 17 hour train ride to Hue, along the central coast of Viet Nam. Spent 3 days in Hoi An, a beautiful, cultural city with great art galleries and restaurants. Left Hoi An last Monday, 7 April. Lots of saddle time, I promise you.6 consecutive days, 550 km, 3 mountain passes, HEAT, Murder City Headwinds everyday, and suddenly we findourselves in Nha Trang. The guidebooks say this is theplace to hang in Viet Nam, but we've seen some rathertranquil, quiet, deserted beaches on this stretch thatwould have me arguing that statement, (and if you asknicely, I may even tell you where they are.) Rolling out of Hoi An on Monday morning wasbittersweet, as it truly has the mellow qualities thatwe were looking for, and as Mac sez, it's a touristtown "done right." But roll out we did, thru lushfields...
