Your Dad rides a recumbent vs. Eric "Roscoe" Ambel

Posted March 28, 2005 @ 6:06am

Yee haw, spring has sprung; today was 60°, tomorrow slated to be 65°. The shop is going off. One On One continues to be a epicenter for bike culture in Minneapolis, and Saturday afternoon we had some very special guests, when Eric "Roscoe" Ambel and Patrick, both of the Steve Earle band, dropped in. They both ride while on tour, and Roscoe is a track bike freak like us. He's also a very accomplished musician and producer, and was an original member of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts! They spent nearly 3 hours checking out the basement, drinking coffee, and generally hanging out. We we rewarded with the guest list for Sunday night's show at First Avenue. Far-freakin' out, man. In local nooze, tree-climbing hardman and inaugural Stupor Bowl champeen, Marko Sundlin was also back home this weekend celebrating the fact that his Dad is buying a recumbent. How soon will ol' #467 be seen cruising the mean streets of Madison on his very own EZ-Racer???

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge vs. BIG MONEY FUCKHEADS IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Posted March 17, 2005 @ 6:06am

Well Happy St. Paddy's Day to y'all. The nooze today that the Republican-led Senate approved a measure to allow drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is just about all I can take. When will Amerika wake up and realize that our dependence on oil is going to bring us down? And how very crafty of the Republikkkans to sneak it through, attached to a 2006 fiscal year budget resolution. If this issue doesn't strike a nerve with you, then your head is firmly ensconced in the sand. Senator Pete Domenici, (R-NM), chairman of the Senate Energy Committee was quoted as saying that the "American energy situation is perilous." Well, no shit, Sherlock. Domenici then goes on to say, "We have to conserve and produce everything we can." Well which is it, Einstein? Conserve, or produce? Presidunce Bush chimed in with equal aplomb, saying he is concerned about the growing demand for oil driving up its price, citing that demand is "out-racing supply, and supplies are getting...

HOUR CAR

Posted March 12, 2005 @ 6:06am

Editorial: Car sharing/Good for drivers and for citiesMarch 12, 2005 ED0312AHere's the simplest recipe for a successful city: more people, fewer cars. More people tend to generate local business, safer neighborhoods and a livelier community life. More cars tend to generate the opposite. That's why better public transit is so important. And it's why car sharing is a welcome addition to Minneapolis-St. Paul. Here's how car sharing will work. Starting in May, a small fleet of hybrid Toyotas will be stationed in the Uptown and Loring Park districts of Minneapolis and in the Lowertown neighborhood of St. Paul. Members of a program called HOURCAR can reserve a car days ahead, drive it when they need it, and get billed electronically. The program is designed for people who rely on the bus or train to get to work but might need a car for weekend trips around town. It's designed also for city families wanting only one car, but needing a second car occasionally. And it will aid...

Yarrrgh!

Posted March 11, 2005 @ 6:06am

And this morning there was two inches of fresh snow on the ground. This, after our 60° ride on Sunday. No bother, really. The streets melt fast this time of year, (but maybe that's from all of the salt thrown down by the city works dept?) The Karate Monkey is finished, and thirsting for some dirt action. I'm afraid that the 20" frame may be a little on the large size for me, but given Surly's horrendous track record for keeping parts/frames in stock, I will just ride this one until I make up my mind. If an 18" frame is deemed necessito, then I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. In other semi-exciting nooze, today I made the deal to get back my original Steamroller prototype bike from my pal Chris in Hood River, Oregon. Hunter greeen and a non-standard rake on the fork. It will be a treat on future SLICK 50 rides, and assorted other tavern trips. Here's a good one: last week I worked 40 hours for the first time in over 3 years. Don't tell anyone; don't want to blow my...
