Dakota 5-0 STEAK FLORENTINE

Posted September 7, 2004 @ 6:06am | by Hurl

Damn, that steak florentine was good! It was an epic battle the entire race, with Fitzy surging to an early lead before the first water station. But I caught him at station #2 and from then on out it was neck and neck. I opened a gap in the greasy, rocky singletrack and came in hot to aid station #3, at the bottom of a dirt road coming off of Old Baldy Trail. Ate some orange slices and half a banana, slammed some gatorade and headed straight up the steep hike-a-bike section. My entire upper body was cramping. I figured I had a few minutes on Fitzy, but I looked over my shoulder and there he was, out of nowhere. "Shit, there he is!" I muttered aloud to no one in particular, and pushed on. My long strides, and even short bursts of running were just enough to hold Fitz back, and by the time I got past Hobo Camp, I put on the juice for the final blazing singletrack down Tinton Trail, even crashing once when my bars clipped a tree. Out of the woods, it was a high speed coast back down the gravel road 3 miles into Spearfish. I rolled across the line at 5:25:32 with Brad Fischer from Denver, (who rode a rigid 32 x 16!) and we tied for 5th place single speed, good enough for the final cash payout position. Fitzy rolled in 4 minutes later, followed 2 minutes after that by Western Spirit Mountain Biking guide, Simon "The Pillock" Stewart. Brauer Power enjoyed a frosty PBR at Hobo Camp w/Nate & Fiona, before surging to the line in 6 hours and some change. First place female single speeder was Emily, Simon's fellow Western Spirit guide. Thanks to Perry Jewett and all of the Ridgeriders for putting on a smokin' event. Mark your calendars now for next year, same weekend, same location. Spearfish, South Dakota. Thanks also, to Simon & Emily, Nate-dawg, Soulcraft, White Industries, Tioga Tires, RockShox, Avid, Brauer Power, Fiona, Fitzy, and Alamo Rental Cars...
