Arctic National Wildlife Refuge vs. BIG MONEY FUCKHEADS IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Posted March 17, 2005 @ 6:06am | by Hurl

Well Happy St. Paddy's Day to y'all. The nooze today that the Republican-led Senate approved a measure to allow drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is just about all I can take. When will Amerika wake up and realize that our dependence on oil is going to bring us down? And how very crafty of the Republikkkans to sneak it through, attached to a 2006 fiscal year budget resolution. If this issue doesn't strike a nerve with you, then your head is firmly ensconced in the sand. Senator Pete Domenici, (R-NM), chairman of the Senate Energy Committee was quoted as saying that the "American energy situation is perilous." Well, no shit, Sherlock. Domenici then goes on to say, "We have to conserve and produce everything we can." Well which is it, Einstein? Conserve, or produce? Presidunce Bush chimed in with equal aplomb, saying he is concerned about the growing demand for oil driving up its price, citing that demand is "out-racing supply, and supplies are getting tight." (Einstein-ian, again.) Bush went on to say that tapping the ANWR is "a way to get some additional reserves here at home on the books." ON THE BOOKS?!?!? What the hell is that? The Republicans like to trot out the possibility that one day the oil companies could produce up to 1 million barrels of oil per day from the ANWR, to combat "America's growing dependence on foreign oil." GROWING? I'd say that our dependence has long since "grown up" and it's high time we direct our energies toward conservation and weaning our society of of oil's teat, never mind that even 1 million barrels a day would be, pardon the pun, a drop in the bucket. As our pal Dan sez: "It will take ten years before we see a drop of oil come out of ANWR. We have to build roads to get there. We have to build pumping stations and pipelines. An entire infrastructure has to be built. We aren't allowed to ride bikes in wilderness areas but they are allowed to build all that in a wildlife refuge? Simply amazing." Go back and read that again, folks. 10 YEARS. ROADS. PIPELINES. PUMPING STATIONS. INFRASTRUCTURE. Fucking hell, already. But rather than hold the Automobile Industry accountable for increased fuel efficiency, and educate the public on the need for conservation as well as alternative fuels, the stodgy, American government insists on profits over common sense. I'm sure Edward Abbey is laughing in derision in his grave at our shortsighted-ness. Does anyone else smell the fall of the Roman Empire, Part Two? Let's not even discuss Wolfowitz and the World Bank. I'm going to need an extra Guinness tonight, after work...
