Cronometro Bikeswap-Madison

Posted January 20, 2004 @ 6:06am

I turned 36 yesterday. That's like turning 18, twice. To my recollection, nothing too spectacular happened on my first 18th birthday, but kicking off this second party is the coldest 15 day forecast in 25 years. It's a god damn "nuke-yuler" winter! There's really only one way to ride in this weather: just give 'er. If you refuse and stay indoors, you'll just be locked up in your own personal Kremlin. Then again, I figure if I'm out pushing the pedals in this arctic tundra, I might as well behave like Boris Yeltsin...This SATURDAY January 24th in MADISON, WISCONSIN, StrongArm Marketing operatives will be attending the CRONOMETRO BIKESWAP (cronometro.com) representing CRC and One On One Bicycle Studio. Plenty of hot crap available including the new Chuck Woolery wool socks, the infamous GET RAD shirt, Vintage VELO-REHAB wool jerseys, and the usual flotsam and jetsam that tends to accumulate when your whole damn lifestyle revolves around bicycles and the like. If you do plan on...

2004 & Zebulon Pike

Posted January 13, 2004 @ 6:06am

In case you were wondering, or even had any doubt (and how could you, really?) Zebulon Pike will be playing a much deserved slot at the Best Bands of 2003 showcase this Wednesday in the First Avenue Mainroom. ZP goes on at 9:00 pm, and as such, the Wed.Nite Ride will meet at First Ave, be bludgeoned by the DOOM-laden instruMETAL, enjoy some 2-4-1's, then ride out into the Block E/Downtown madness. Bring ear plugs...And now for something completely different. Today, SRAM Corp announced the signing of a letter of intent to purchase Avid, L.L.C., the brake manufacturing dynamo's of Colorado's Front Range. Interesting development, indeed. SRAM is the bicycle industry's second largest component supplier, and this acquisition shore's up their brake division, obviously, even though they are no stranger to brake systems, having offered linear pull designs in the past, as well as a hydraulic disc brake, licensed from Grimeca. If you haven't heard already, Paola Pezzo will return to...

Thursday Morning Ride

Posted January 8, 2004 @ 6:06am

It's 4:16 a.m. and I've just gotten home from the first Wednesday Night Ride of 2004. A 4-Pack of riders showed up: Mark of the Beast, Power Wagon, Grave Day, and Dwight Trashed. G as in Jeezus!A brief alley tour, followed by a nice leisurely ride down Minnehaha Creek, (on the ice, natch; I mean, shit, it's been minus ONE THOUSAND for the past three days, so what the fuck, and complete with a slow leak-to-tube change flat for me) led us to our initial base layer at Westrum's (43rd & Nicollet). Absconding from Westrum's, what better way to kick off the Nu year, than a fire. So back to the creek, below Lyndale, for a scramble burn, and this was all fine, since both Power Wagon and myself held flasks. After some drunken calls to Chevil Knevil, McFluff, Zito and others (as the first 4 riders of '04, we've decreed that we are the Chairmans of the Board, and the time for rousting is now! Brauer, you softie! Sov-you ain't evil!), it was time to hit the bricks. Southernly for the...

assorted drivel

Posted January 7, 2004 @ 6:06am

Damn, the Xtracycle is the shit! Today, I hauled the keg (empty, finally!) back to the Liquor Depot, strapped to the deck of the Xtracycle. The quizzical looks from the sad souls trapped in their coffins began almost immediately. Plenty of smiles and thumbs up, though. And the guys at the Depot were most intrigued. One of the employees came outside to check it out, and volunteered that he\'s car-free. Loves living and working downtown. Right on, brother. From the Depot, it was a leisurely ride Uptown to the K-Mart on Nicollet for some paint. Riding the Greenway on the way home, Gnarly Noah Kaufman, himself a recent Xtracycle convert, rolled up and we chatted for a few blocks. Then, just before the roundy-round leading up to 394/Penn Avenue, I saw a yellow-jacketed cyclist on a Mark Zeh fixxie. It\'s reassuring to see people out on their rides, regardless of the weather. Get some good clothes, people, and the world is yours! Hey man, it\'s 7:30 on Wednesday night, and it would be...

Happy Nu-metal Year

Posted January 5, 2004 @ 6:06am

Holidays come and go, like they do every year, but I still have a keg of Summit Pale in my living room. Two nights of trying, and the damn thing still ain't empty. That's alright, though, because the weather outside IS frightening: 0 degrees with a minus 25 windchill. But whutcha gonna do about it? Bitch and moan? Nope. Put on the vapor barrier, and RIDE, dammit. Don't gimme none of that No Go Diggy Di shit...This website is going to see a major revamp in the next few weeks, complete with shopping cart buttons for all you impulse buyers, new tshirts, and a new hoodie, wool socks, and maybe even some goat cheese. Stay tuned for that, but in the interim, be sure to head down to Cockleburr & Catboxxes' One On One Studio, in Minneapolis' seedy Warehouse District, for lots of bicycle-related goodness. All this typing is making me thirsty...
