Flava Flav on the hype tip

Posted February 28, 2006 @ 6:46pm

Well shit, goddamn. It's about time that something was *devoted* to this CRC Coffee Bar/Cykel Garage thing (and the 'cykel' is homage to them damn Scandihoovians who spell it like that). I want it to be known that I appreciate all of the support and kind words that have been volleyed in my direction. The St. Paul Pioneer Press dropped some nice ink on Sunday. Also, remember that we're not only selling coffee, soup, and Pop-Tarts, we're also selling used bicycles (think single speeds, urban fixies, commuter hacks, etc.), tubes, locks, blinky lights, and more. And we've got one hell of a 'zine library for you to check out while on the spot. Spring is just round yonder corner and once it warms up we will indeed open the garage door and offer you some sweet sidewalk seating. Until then, drop the mouse and get on your bike. You'd be amazed at how quiet and serene the city streets are at 6:30 am. Now that the sun is rising earlier, it's even better.

He ain't heavy, he's my brother...

Posted February 28, 2006 @ 6:06am

Happy Birthday to my "little" brother, Richard. And by "little," I mean "younger." When we were younger, (long ago) we jokingly called each other "Fat Boy" and "Fat Guy." Bought each other Sans-A-Belt trousers as gag Xmas gifts. These days I'm hovering around Clydesdale territory, and Rich ain't gonna win any "abs-of-steel" contests. But I don't care. Maybe he is heavy. He's still my brother. Happy Birthday, Richard. And Geno, too. Happy Birthday you 44 year old adolescent...

Ladies & Gentlemen

Posted February 27, 2006 @ 6:06am

Went to the Bicycle Swap Meet in St. Paul yesterday, and could not have done so without the generous support of one B. ROSE. I didn't sell much, but did sell most of B. Rose's gear. Fairplay to him. However, I did buy some sweet Dura Ace (FC-7402) cranks w/a Spot chainring guard, and a pair of XTR cantilevers so I now have a complete set for some sweet cross bike action. Come to think of it, I also bought a set of NOS LX V-brakes w/levers from Geno, and a pair of BR-M420 (ahem) V-brakes in the box, from Pintz Guzzled. Speaking of pints guzzled, our 4-bloc table went thru a case of Guinness bottles rather quickly, being sure to clandestinely drink them from assorted coffee cups so as to avoid the glowering looks and wrath of those who are into glowering looks and wrath...After the swap, per tradition, we stopped at the Dubliner for a few more pints before roaring back across the river in the Huey, and rescuing BRose from his days indentured servitude. Thank you, BRose, for being so...

What the hell is Cars-R-Coffins

Posted February 20, 2006 @ 6:06am

I get asked this question a lot, especially now that I've opened the CRC Coffee Bar. And while a lot of you may know me, and know what I'm trying to say, I thought I'd repost this little nugget from the MTBR archive, (April 2005.) I'm not trying to alienate anyone, nor be a smart ass. CRC can (and does) mean many things to many people. Here's just one option. It's a bit of ramble, so read at your own pace...Q:Cars-R-CoffinsWho or what are they?I've seen the logo, I've seen articles of clothing emblazoned with the logo, I've visited the website and cannot for the life of me figure what on earth Cars-R-Coffins are.Are they a clothing line? A bike shop? A subculture? A collective of superheroes? A bunch of assh0les? A mere figment of my imagination? What?A:"what is/are Cars-R-Coffins?" Well it's like this, see: It's simply a way of looking at the car-dominant culture we live in, and making an observation. It's not wanting to be strapped behind the wheel of some 2 ton...

Fair Trade, Cool Weather,

Posted February 16, 2006 @ 6:06am

Check out this fine story in this week's City Pages on our favorite fine fair trade PEACE COFFEE. Come on down to CRC Coffee Bar, and enjoy some. Temps are dropping this weekend, which means we'll finally have some true winter. Perfect weather as we're expecting lots of industry ne'er-do-wells to be in town for QBP's annual FROSTBIKE. But this arctic blast will only last thru the weekend, and then we're on the fast track to spring. We're halfway thru February already. Should have two more bikes in the shop for sale this weekend. A Schwinn Traveler 4130 single speed conversion, and a nice Raleigh 531 framed fixed gear. Here's an update on the New York Critical Mass crackdown.Cheerios.-Hurl
